About us

Makes your self at home and enjoy a unique experience

Avli Luxury Villas is located on the peaceful outskirts of Pigadia, the island’s capital, and only a few kilometers from Aperi, the village where my family has roots.

This land—an olive grove passed down since the early 1800s—still holds some of the original trees, their gnarled trunks a quiet testament to generations of care.

Every winter, during the olive harvest, the whole family would come together. We’d work the grove from dawn to dusk, then gather with neighbors around the old stone oven beside the ancestral house. Fresh bread, slow-roasted meats, the sound of the Karpathian lyre, and glasses of our sweet local wine turned long days into warm, lasting memories.

At Avli, we’ve built on this heritage to create a place where guests can feel the same ease and connection. Whether you’re relaxing by your private pool, exploring the island, or simply enjoying the scent of rosemary and thyme from the garden, we want your stay to be comfortable, authentic, and memorable. We hope you leave with stories of your own.

Warm regards,
Sofia Sakellaridi Owner, Avli Luxury Villas

History and stories

A Mythic Past Beneath the Stars

According to the ancient historian Diodorus Siculus, Karpathos was first claimed around 1300 BC by Minoa, the legendary king of Crete, who—together with his seafaring allies—became the first Greek to command the waves. Generations later, Dorian settlers from Argos in the Peloponnese arrived, bringing the proud cadence of their dialect. These Dorians, one of the four great Greek tribes, shaped an island culture so resilient that, even today, elders in the mountaintop village of Olympos weave ancient Dorian words into everyday speech—a living echo of Homer’s era.

The island itself strides boldly into epic poetry: in Homer’s Iliad, Karpathos joins the Dodecanese fleet, dispatching more than 50 ships to the siege of Troy—an armada of bronze and salt that still seems to shimmer on the horizon at sunset.

History and stories

The Lucullan Fish of Legend

In antiquity, Karpathos was renowned for a single, exquisite delicacy: the parrotfish (Sparus sparisoma cretense), known locally as skaros. So prized was this iridescent creature that the Roman general Lucius Licinius Lucullus (117–56 BC)—whose banquets birthed the phrase “Lucullan feast”—would transport live skaros in barrels of seawater from Karpathos to Rome. There, beneath torchlight and laurel, he served them to senators and poets alike, the fish’s delicate flesh a symbol of the island’s untamed bounty.

Today, as you dine al fresco beside your pool—perhaps grilling the day’s catch on the built-in BBQ—you are continuing a 3,000-year tradition of open-air feasts under the same Aegean sky that once fed gods, warriors, and emperors.

At Villa Rosemary, Villa Lavender, and Villa Dafni, every sunrise over the garden of aromatic herbs is a quiet homage to this storied land: a place where Dorian voices linger in the wind, where Trojan ships once set sail, and where the sea still delivers its ancient, shimmering gifts.
